College Students

Underinsured, Survey says More than 80 percent of students who rent during the school year may not have enough insurance to protect their personal property, such as computers and stereo equipment, or to shield them from liability if someone should get hurt in their apartment, according to a survey commissioned by the Independent Insurance Agents of America (IIAA).

Although most students said that their personal property wasn't insured simply because they "didn't think about it," having basic insurance, including health, auto, and renters, can make the difference between a pleasant college experience and one that spells potential financial disaster for students and their parents. An uninsured loss, such as the theft of a laptop computer, or a liability claim resulting from a party mishap, can deal a big blow to a student's limited bank account or the financial well-being of parents who are already likely struggling to pay high tuition costs.

The survey numbers are significant because 55 percent of college students now live away from home during the school year, nearly 20 percent rent off-campus housing, and almost 10 percent own their own home or apartment.

If you have college-age children, the agents at Avery Insurance suggest that you stop by to discuss providing them with basic insurance coverage while they are in school.
